Your IBAN stays with you
The check runs directly in your browser. The IBAN is neither sent nor stored.
One or more IBANs, one per line. Spaces don't matter. Example: DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00
Check an IBAN before money is on its way
A single typo in an IBAN can hold up a transfer or a refund to a customer. Because every IBAN contains two check digits, wrong and swapped characters almost always show up. The IBAN checker tells you instantly whether length, structure and check digits are correct, and for German IBANs it also shows the bank, BIC and city.
What is checked
- Country code: whether the country uses IBAN according to the SWIFT IBAN Registry
- Length: every country has a fixed number of characters, 22 in Germany
- Structure: whether each position holds digits or letters as the country requires
- Check digits: the modulo 97 calculation that applies to every IBAN
Bank and BIC for German IBANs
In a German IBAN, positions 5 to 12 hold the bank code (Bankleitzahl), followed by the account number. We look up the bank code in the Deutsche Bundesbank bank sort code file and show the bank, BIC and city. If the Bundesbank has scheduled a bank code for deletion, you see a notice. For IBANs from other countries we do not show bank data.
What a valid IBAN does not mean
“Valid” means the IBAN is correctly structured. Only the bank can tell whether the account exists and who owns it. For SEPA credit transfers in euro, your bank has been checking since 9 October 2025 whether the payee name and IBAN match.
Several IBANs at once
Paste a list, for example account details for refunds or new suppliers, with one IBAN per line. You see instantly how many are valid and exactly where an error is.
Frequently Asked Questions About the IBAN Checker
Is the IBAN checker free?
Yes. You use it without signing up and without an email address, even for many IBANs at once.
Is my IBAN sent or stored?
No. The check runs in your browser. For German IBANs the page loads the public bank code directory once; your IBAN is not transmitted.
What does “The check digits do not match” mean?
The third and fourth characters of an IBAN are check digits calculated from all other characters. If they don't match, at least one character is wrong, for example a typo or two swapped digits.
Does the checker show who owns the account?
No. A valid IBAN is correctly structured. Only the bank knows whether the account exists and who holds it. For SEPA credit transfers in euro, your bank has been checking since 9 October 2025 whether the payee name and IBAN match.
How up to date are bank and BIC?
We use the Deutsche Bundesbank bank sort code file, which is published four times a year. Below the result you see until when the file in use is valid.
Which countries are checked?
All 89 countries and territories in the SWIFT IBAN Registry. Bank and BIC are shown for German IBANs.
